It is an art of designing dynamic applications which adapt different behaviours according to the user and his environment. It is the next big thing in the field of UX. Adaptive thinking is used to create the desired experience for the user before he asked for it. Applications read user’s needs automatically which triggers a change in the application’s behaviour, resulting in user satisfaction. It is the shortest path to achieve a user goal. Adaptive thinking includes artificial intelligence, user behaviour, environment, sensors & connection.

Let’s take some examples.

Google now
It has done a good job in the field of adaptive thinking. Google now gives good suggestions to the user based on his location and environment. It shows weather info which is very useful for a user if he is about to travel to his office. Also, it suggests traffic congestion one the way to his office. So the user goal is met even before the user asked for it.

Google Map App
Suppose a user is driving to a distant place following the route on google map. He enters a highway tunnel, now app interface becomes total black in spite of white to save the driver from getting blind. App uses GPS location and artificial intelligence to adapt a different behaviour which satisfies the user.

Google search
Have you ever wondered how Google knows what are you upto while typing in? Let me tell you the logic behind it. When you type first three letters of a word, suggestions start to pop out and most of the times you get what you want. Google search correlates your typing with search session stored in history. It saves each search sessions, which defines your interests and personality. Next time when you start typing, it will read your mind and would make assumptions based on your personality and interest.

Nest
It is a learning thermostat which adapts according to the needs. It can sense if there is no one in the room or room is overcrowded with people. It works accordingly. Also if a user comes home daily at 6, it adapts itself to warm the house daily at this particular time.

Adaptive thinking is the next big thing to watch out for. Hope you like the article!! Please share and comment if you find it useful.
